Devotional #4: The First Promise
"Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you."
Exodus 20:12
Imagine if there was a special rule that came with a promise, like if you ate your vegetables, you'd become a superhero. Sounds exciting, right? Well, God gave us a rule with a promise: "Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you."
Now, you might be thinking, what does it mean to honor? Honoring is about showing respect. It's about listening when your parents speak, and it's about helping out without being asked. It's about saying thank you and please. It's about giving a hug or a smile just because.
And guess what? God's promise isn't just about living a long life. It's about a good, full life, filled with love and joy, in a land—a world—that God has prepared for us.
But honoring isn't always easy. Sometimes, we might not want to listen or help. That's okay. God knows we're not perfect, but He loves when we try.
This week, let's try to honor our parents more as they honor us as kids and watch how that makes our family stronger.
